Kids’ Dental Emergencies: A Fairfield Parent’s Guide

September 25, 2026

Child having a tooth checked after a playground fall at Emergency Dentist Fairfield, Fairfield, CA 94534

It happens on the scooter, at soccer, or on the edge of the coffee table, and it is always right before dinner. A child’s dental emergency in Fairfield, CA 94534 feels worse than it usually is, mostly because there is blood, tears and a parent who has no idea what to do next. This guide fixes the last part. It covers the five emergencies kids actually have, what to do in the first ten minutes, the one big difference between baby teeth and adult teeth, and how to tell “watch it tonight” from “we need to be seen today.”

First: baby tooth or adult tooth?

This changes everything, so work it out first. Children get their first adult front teeth around age 6–7 and adult molars behind the baby teeth around the same age. Rule of thumb: under 6, assume baby tooth; 7–12, it could be either (adult front teeth, baby teeth further back); 13 and up, assume adult.

The five emergencies, and the first ten minutes

  • Knocked-out adult tooth. Hold it by the white part, never the root. Rinse it for a second in milk or water, no scrubbing. Put it back in the socket and have your child bite gently on a cloth, or drop it in a cup of milk. Call us on the way. The clock matters: the first 30–60 minutes decide whether it can be saved.
  • Chipped or broken tooth. Rinse the mouth, find and keep the pieces in milk, cold compress on the lip. If the chip exposes a pink or red spot, that is the nerve; call today. See broken or chipped tooth.
  • Cut lip, tongue or gum. Pressure with a clean cloth for 10 minutes, then ice. Mouths bleed a lot and heal fast. A cut that goes through the lip or will not stop after 15 minutes needs stitches: urgent care or ER.
  • Toothache. Usually a cavity that has reached the nerve. Warm salt-water rinse, children’s pain reliever as directed for their age and weight, no aspirin. Book for the next day; same day if there is any swelling of the face or gum.
  • Braces or wire injury. Cover a poking wire with orthodontic wax or a small piece of sugar-free gum; do not cut it. See orthodontic injuries.

When it can wait until tomorrow

A small chip with no sensitivity, a wobbly baby tooth that was already loose, a bitten lip that stopped bleeding, or a mild ache with no swelling can all wait for a next-day visit. What cannot wait: a knocked-out or displaced adult tooth, a tooth broken with the nerve showing, facial swelling, or bleeding that will not stop. Our decision guide works for kids too.

Sports: the emergency you can prevent

Most knocked-out and broken teeth in kids come from sports, and most of those happen without a mouthguard. A custom mouthguard costs less than one emergency visit and lasts a season or two. If your child plays soccer, basketball, baseball or anything on wheels, ask about one at their next checkup, and read our sports dental injury page for what to do on the sideline.

What the visit is like for a child

Calm, quick and explained at their level. We check the injury, take an X-ray if needed to look at the adult tooth underneath, and do the minimum needed that day: smooth an edge, bond a chip, re-seat a tooth, or settle a toothache. Nervous kids can have nitrous oxide. For ongoing care after the emergency, our sister office offers a gentle kids’ dentist in Fairfield.

Frequently Asked Questions — Kids’ Dental Emergencies Fairfield

My child knocked out a baby tooth. Should I put it back?

No. Re-implanting a baby tooth can damage the adult tooth forming underneath. Stop the bleeding with pressure, keep the tooth, and bring your child in for a check and X-ray.

My child knocked out an adult tooth. What do I do?

Hold it by the crown, rinse briefly in milk, put it back in the socket or keep it in milk, and get to a dentist within 30–60 minutes. Call (707) 422-3500 on the way.

Is a chipped tooth an emergency for a child?

Same day if the chip is large, the tooth is sensitive, or you can see a pink or red spot in the break. A small chip with no pain can wait for a next-day visit; keep any pieces in milk.

What pain reliever can I give my child for a toothache?

Children’s acetaminophen or ibuprofen dosed for their age and weight as the label directs. Never aspirin, and nothing placed directly on the gum. Book a visit; a toothache means a cavity that needs treating.
