Patient with knocked-out tooth needing emergency reimplantation in Fairfield CA

Why the First 30 Minutes Matter Most

An adult tooth that has been completely knocked out can often be reimplanted successfully, but only if you act fast. The cells on the tooth root start dying within minutes outside the mouth. After 30 minutes, the success rate drops sharply. After 1-2 hours, reimplantation is rarely successful. The best outcome comes when the tooth is back in the socket (or stored properly) within minutes and you’re at our office shortly after.

Don’t delay. Call us right now at (707) 422-3500 while you’re on your way.

Critical First Steps for a Knocked-Out Tooth

Pick up the tooth by the crown only

Never touch the root. The tiny cells on the root surface are what allow reattachment.

Rinse briefly with milk or saline

Only if visibly dirty. Don't scrub. Don't use water (it damages root cells).

Try to reinsert it in the socket

Hold by the crown and gently slip it back into place. Bite on a clean cloth to keep it there.

If you can't reinsert, store it in milk

Cold milk is the best preservation medium. Saliva or saline solution also work.

Don't store the tooth in water

Water damages root cells within minutes and reduces survival chances.

What We Do When You Arrive

Our team is ready to act fast when you arrive with a knocked-out tooth. After numbing the area, Dr. Singh gently cleans the socket, reinserts the tooth, and stabilizes it with a small splint to neighboring teeth. The tooth typically needs to stay splinted for 2-4 weeks while the periodontal ligament reattaches. Most reimplanted teeth need emergency root canal within 7-14 days. If reimplantation isn’t successful, dental implants provide a permanent replacement once healing is complete.

For follow-up care after a knocked-out tooth heals, our sister practice fairfielddentistry.com handles long-term restorative dental work and family services.

Knocked Out Tooth FAQs

Yes, in many cases, if you act within 30 minutes. The faster the tooth is back in its socket (or stored properly in milk), the higher the chance of successful reimplantation. After 1-2 hours outside the mouth, reimplantation usually isn't successful.
Don't try to reimplant a baby tooth. Reimplanting it can damage the developing permanent tooth underneath. Save the baby tooth in milk and call us anyway, we still need to evaluate for any damage to surrounding teeth, gums, or the underlying permanent tooth.
Milk has a similar pH and nutrient balance to the inside of your mouth, which keeps the cells on the tooth root alive longer than water. Saliva is also good (just put the tooth between your cheek and gum if you can't reinsert). Saline solution is another acceptable choice.
Only briefly rinse it with milk, saline, or your saliva. Don't scrub, brush, or use chemicals. Don't dry it. The tiny cells on the root surface are extremely fragile, and any aggressive cleaning destroys the chance of reattachment.
Emergency reimplantation typically runs $300 to $500, plus follow-up root canal ($700 to $1,500) usually within 7-14 days. If reimplantation fails, dental implants ($3,000-$5,500) become the long-term option. We provide upfront estimates, accept most insurance, and offer CareCredit financing.
Don't worry, we have replacement options. Once the socket heals (typically 6-8 weeks), a dental implant gives you a permanent, natural-looking tooth that lasts decades. A bridge or partial denture are alternatives if implants aren't right for your situation.
